Vengo del barrio cosmopolita y pobre de Belleville en París. A fines de la década de 1980, el barrio estaba amenazado de ser arrasado y había drogas por todas partes. Hubo muchos desalojos, amurallamiento, suicidios y derribos. Pero también hay resistencia, convivencia y fiesta. Es importante saber que desde principios del siglo XX, varias oleadas de inmigrantes han venido a mezclarse con los trabajadores y artesanos que vivían aquí. Esta mezcla de colores ha dado un rostro único a este rincón de París. Aquí es donde crecí, en el multiculturalismo. Creo que mi interés por otras culturas viene de ahí. Nunca pensé en la fotografía como una profesión, sino como una forma de vida. La fotografía me llegó tarde, después de los peligros de vivir en un barrio pobre con todo lo que eso conlleva. Por más místico que suene, fue un sueño lo que empezó todo. Simplemente seguí la voz de ese sueño. Así que me puse a trabajar y compré mi primera cámara. Desde el principio me interesó la gente con su fragilidad y su dignidad. Inmediatamente supe que había encontrado mi camino; el trabajo de mi vida sería ser fotógrafo.

I come from the cosmopolitan and poor neighbourhood of Belleville in Paris. In the late 1980s, the neighbourhood was threatened with being razed to the ground, and there were drugs everywhere. There were a lot of evictions, walling, suicides and demolitions. But there is also resistance, coexistence and celebration. It is important to know that since the beginning of the 20th century, several waves of immigrants have come to mix with the workers and artisans who lived here. This mixture of colours has given this corner of Paris a unique face. This is where I grew up, in multiculturalism. My interest in other cultures comes from there. I never considered photography a profession but a way of life. Photography came to me late, after the dangers of living in a poor neighbourhood with all that that entails. As mystical as it sounds, a dream started it all. I simply followed the voice of that dream. So I went to work and bought my first camera. From the beginning, I was interested in people with their fragility and their dignity. I immediately knew that I had found my path; my life's work would be to be a photographer.
